DAVID LÓPEZ

 

David owns a bachelor’s degree in Percussion Performance from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). He owns a Master in Music degree from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), where he studied under Dr. Dean Gronemeier. As a guest he has performed with many symphoni orchestras in Mexico such as: Marimba Nandayapa, Orquesta Sinfonica de Aguascalientes, Orquesta Filarmonica de Queretaro, Orquesta Sinfonica de la Universidad de Guanajuato, and other. David has accompanied international artists such as Nanae Mimura (Japan), Keiko Kotoku (Japan), Angel Frette (Argentina), Ludwig Albert (Belgium), and Lalo (USA).

As a soloist he has performed recital halls in Mexico City. In 2001 and 2002 he was awarded honorable mentions for his brilliant performances at the “James Huntzinger Solo Competition” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2003 he composed the music for the theater play El Señor de la Tierra. In 2007 David composed the music for the theater show Palenque Rojo, currently presented in San Cristobal de la Casas, Chiapas. He is editor and co-author of the book/CD Jugar y Vivir la Ciencia published by the UNICACH in 2007. His compositions have been used in radio series Ciencia a la Mexicana, have been boradcatsed in the state of Chiapas by the Sistema Chiapaneco de Radio y Televisión, nationwide in Mexican television program Piel de Estrellas by Televisa, nationwide in the USA by National Public Radio. His music was recently used in the exhibition Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler at the British Museum (London).

David is director of Tunkul Percusiones Mexico, a project that deals with the pre-Hispanic musical instruments from Mexico (www.tunkul.com.mx). He has presented lectures, clinics and concerts in the United States: Arizona State University, University of Texas at Brownsville, University of Nevada Las Vegas, McNeese State University, Northern Illinois University, PASIC 2007 (Percussive Arts Society International Convention), South Padre Island Lecture Series, Southwest Louisiana Day of Percussion 2009. Argentina: Sexto Festival Internacional Percusion Patagonia 2008. México: Casa del Lago of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, IV Festival Internacional de Percusiones Monterrey 2007, Primer Festival Internacional de Percusiones Matamoros 2009. David was Associate Professor at the Escuela Nacional de Música (UNAM) for four years. For seven years he was Full Professor at the Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas (UNICACH), where he was Director of Percussion Studies and main condutor of the UNICACH Symphony Orchestra from 2002 to 2005. He is currently adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Brownsville, where he also serves as Assistant Director of Percusion Studies.
